SITUATION:
A food processor was removing contaminants from gelatin liquor with pressure leaf filters that were pre-coated with diatomaceous earth (DE).
The DE, however, would periodically break off, travel downstream, and plug the ion exchange unit. This resulted in two-days of downtime to allow employees to manually clean the column.
