Flux rate is the flow through a specific filter area. When this is lowered, so is the velocity of the liquid and solids going to the filter media.
As a result, the solid particles lie on the surface of the media, and create a porous particulate cake.
This improves efficiencies in particle removal while allowing liquid to pass, providing longer periods between filter cleaning.

What are design flux rates?
Design flux rates are application specific. When filtering heavy feedstock's, flux rates of 1 to 2 gpm/ft2 (40 - 80 lpm/m2) are recommended.
In addition, when filtering lighter hydrocarbons, flux rates are generally higher.
